So been playing here for a short while and find that most players don’t chat whilst playing. I mean not even to say hi. Is this normal?

Be thankful no one is chatting. This is one of the most toxic places on the internet at times.

I try to chat during longer time controls, usually just to say good move, or I didn't think about that. Shorter time controls, not so much.

I'm pretty chatty, but even I found that people get super offended about being chatty. Prolly only about 1/6th of people even bother with it.

No, only chat before or after games. Chatting during a game is improper, annoying and if it helps you do well - cheating.

Jesus you seem to call everything cheating

Personally, I'm fairly chatty myself, but not everyone is up for polite small talk. This is especially true in rated games. Small talk is more generous in unrated games and even more so under longer time controls - otherwise you talking yourself might be rude! After all, chess is a game of focus; most players are simply concentrating on the game and aren't here for chatting.

So, it really depends on your opponent. Sometimes, I’ll ask them if they want to go over our moves to help each other improve.

This has a much better success rate if you find a chess.com friend you want to play unrated chess with and you agree beforehand that you both will review the game afterwards.

Normally I don't chat during games.  Not that I've been on chess.com that long or played that many games.  Win or lose, I do like to say "good game" and thank my opponent when it's over.  Discussing a game when it's over would be helpful if the person was up for it.

If you come from an OTB playing background your inclination will not be to chat during matches.  Online chess has a different dynamic but by and large if you are playing a timed match most will not look to chat outside of wishing you luck in the beginning and comments at the end.   Unless I am playing a daily game, I will always go into focus mode as I want to concentrate and focus mode does not display the chat.  I would also have to agree with some of the other comments, there are a lot of immature personalities on the platform and game chat gives some of these personalities a platform to indulge themselves.   Overall you are better to play in focus mode during timed matches and hopefully engage in constructive chat during daily matches.

Y'all take this stuff way too seriously. If I didn't want to chat I would play a bot.

I only allow chat with persons on my friend list. I never accept chat with/from people I do not know. I just don't want to chat with toxic individuals.

I like the chat during games. Rapid or daily only.

yes. I enjoy some light witty banter and also meeting new people

Exactly. I'm not looking for a whole life story or anything. Just a "hi" "good game" "nice move" "whoops" etc.

I like to chat in slower games, but only if time pressure is no issue
