did chess.com daily puzzle had an illegal move today?

Am I misunderstanding chess rules? The daily puzzle recommended a diagonal move for a pawn to an empty square.🤷🏻‍♀️. I took a screen shot but can’t attach it here.

Look up "en passant".

It is a legal move called En Passant. When a pawn on it's first move, moves two spaces and lands next to a pawn, then the player can choose to move another piece, move the pawn forward one square, or capture diagonally the pawn which moved two spaces, as if it had only moved one space. Capturing must be done immediately, not after another move/moves. This rule came about when to slightly speed up the game they allowed a pawn to move two squares instead of one. It was noticed that by moving two squares it could pass a pawn avoiding capture, so en passant fixed that.

White was on d5 and recommended to move to empty c6. Does this meet the criteria for en passant?

Black Moved his pawn TWO squares to c5, landing next to whites pawn on d5. So yes white if he chooses captures as if black had only moved One square. dxc6 (removing the c5 pawn)

No, there's an extra rule called en passant. This isn't the first time people got confused by it

I think I understand now. That pawn was in place before the daily “puzzle” started (the board showed up mid-game, as puzzles do). However the computer knew that it had moved forward 2 spaces at once (as opposed to 2 single spaces) although I didn’t. It did offer the diagonal move when I touched the piece, so that should have been my clue. Thanks for helping me sort this out!

Correct. if blacks pawn was on c6 and moved to c5 next to the whites pawn on d5, it could not be captured by en passant. They were in a challenge position already and a pawn could have been taken. Only when conflict is avoided by moving the 2 square leap in one move, can en passant take place.

As far as the computer knowing, so should you. Whether you or the computer makes the move, both the square that a piece is moved from and the square the piece lands on are both highlighted. Remember to look where a pawn, was moved from now that you know about en passant.. And you are welcome.

Why does tower moves diagonally? Why in 960 there are four white towers? Does AI tests our patience? Is AI broken?
