The site uses the Glicko rating system that includes a measure of rating uncertainty called the rating deviation (RD) value. When a player has no or few games in a rating pool, or large time gaps in play, their RD value is high and they'll see larger rating changes after games. As more games are played the RD value drops as does the magnitude of rating changes.
With a sufficient number of games what you're seeing is normal.
