They are removed once you stop paying for that specific package of the membership.
Membership indicators
No, at the moment there is no option for a premium member to remove their premium membership tag. However, this is a good suggestion which will be noted.

So that they can attract a lot of flak for having the temerity to make suggestions as a free member.

i dont see your reasoning there artfizz, i mean that i saw people having a go at someone with a membership. They were accusing him of being "spoiled" and buying a membership. IN any case if i were to buy a membership I wouldnt want to flaunt it.

From time to time, when a free member suggests a new feature, it is misinterpreted as a gripe that the said feature does not already exist and that free members are not already able to use it. Sometimes this stems from the form in which the suggestion is expressed e.g. "Why can't we have ... ?" can seem to have a certain whinging tone to it.
When it comes to a discussion of features that are either exclusive to premium members - or where premium members receive more (e.g. vacation) - then a suggestion of change by a free member - particularly in the name of fairness - is often poorly received.
I see your pont but i do not think that this suggestion is whining. People who pay for this site should in turn get what they pay for. people who play for free should be happy with the ton of stuff that is provided on this site (e.g. articles from IMs, FMs, and other ranked players)
The membership icons are an excellent idea. They advertise membership making more people become members helping this site stay up and letting the staff make new features.

I AM NOT AGAINST THE ICONS. i was just pointing out that some people may not want to have them at all.

I am not discussing the features that members do/don't have. I was asking if that star by your name is optonal or not. In other words is there an option "remove star".
"That star by your name" is [discussing] a feature that members do/don't have.
(That is the only point I am making.)

ok, it just seemed like you were telling me that i was complaining about not having it (i dont want it in any case)
The more suggestions the better, as far as I'm concerned.
I am only a "basic" member on chess.com so i dont know but, those icons that you get by your name are they permanent? or can they be removed? It seems to me that someone with a membership might not want to flaunt it around.
