Was Bobby Fischer the only American to become officially world chess champion?

Two American world champions it sounds to me. Steinitz (dual nationality) and Fischer. Morphy was the greatest of his time. America can indeed mean the wider continent but used here for the US of course.

William Steinitz was an Austrian and, later, American chess player. From 1886 to 1894, he was the first official World Chess Champion.

Brain drain at which USA was already good, lol

An American leaves in USA, America is  indeed a continent.

In the words of Levy Rozman, "If you aren't filling your daily quota of offended by something you are not living like a true American" True, Levy.

You are right @CarolinaCrown except maybe for using "is" instead of was. Undoubtedly, when Bobby Fischer went insane, he became a different person. I only respect the chess player who surprised the world as nobody else, either before or later.

Harry Pilsbury was World Champion level for a brief period before he became ill, beating Steinitz and Lasker

I believe almost every chess master considers Paul Morphy a world champion even though there wasn't an "official" world championship system in place yet.

absolutely true, he was American champion in 1897 until 1906, clearly a great player but not world champion. He was killed by Syphilis, at that time...

True, very talented he defeated the best French and German and American players but never world became chess champion

Robalero

Paul Morphy, while not an offical world champion because the title did not exist at the time, was considred the best player in the world the short time he was active as a tournament and match player.

@Robalero True, very talented, he defeated the best French, German and American players but never world became chess champion. So Bobby Is the only American champion to defeat the URSS aramda and this alone. Exceptional Bobby Fischer
