You can't refresh the page nor close the browser as that automatically disconnects you from the game server and you can't rejoin after that and the game is abandoned after that. The countdown might have been a client side script still giving the appearance you are live with the game but you weren't actually connected at all anymore.
Why did I lose this game???
Have thousands of games on record, and this is a recent problem

If you're on the iOS app there was a bug indentified on a couple of versions that impacted some games.
Staff pushed a fix in version 4.7.17 of the app.

This is incredibly bad, isn't it?
The staff have pushed away hundreds of reports in the last several months. The problem is surely on the user's end, you should just clear your cache. And now there is a bug? And it will be repaired some day, but until then good luck? And no explanation, no article, nothing?
This couldn't look worse even if they tried really hard.

The first version that was identified with the problem came out three weeks ago, it wasn't months. As more devices updated the issue started being seen more often and identified as being related to those versions and fixed. The bulk of the specific reports were over the last week.
Here's the game that the server claims I abandoned.
As you can see, I barely used any time at all. And more than that, I was refreshing the page and I even closed the browser and came back several times. And each time my opp's clock was still counting down.
