Are Rook vs bishop endgames winnable

Sort:
Chalfin07

In one of my games I reached a position where I had a rook for a bishop. All the pawns where gone. I got stuck not knowing what to  do .Obviously my opponent had insufficient material so he could not mate me and I well had a rook I guess. Isn't this a forced draw or there is some tactic I don't know about.

Yeah, you can mate with a rook. You just have to make sure to get their bishop out of the way

The evaluation was giving me a slight advantage in analysis however I found no way of winning except maybe checking the king repeatedly and hoping he makes a mistake. Otherwise it would just be draw by 50 move rule

Wait, can you post the game link here?

According to this analysis board it's a draw (if white doesn't blunder the bishop).

Black has a 0.2 advantage

But it would depend on both players knowing how to play the right moves and not making any blunders/mistakes.

If black times out it is a draw.

If white captures the rook it is a draw

Yep, so thats why it really depends on their moves. but I think it'll more likely end as a draw cuz both of the players wont know what to do idk

chesslover0003

It is only a win for black if white blunders

CheckOnYaLater

Yeah lol or if black times out as you said, but I hope I never have this sort of thing happen to me during a game, its just hard.

it’s winnable but its not forced

This happened because I figured even if I loose all my pawns I would be winning in a bishop vs rook endgame. But I suppose not.

of course if the defender has his king on the same color as the bishop, then it is still winning for the attacker

KR vs. KB is usually a draw, but there are exceptions, e.g. white to play and win
