Capture with pawn or piece??

Sort:

This is a situation I've found in one of my games recently, where black resigned at this position (not sure why...)

But, thing is, I'm not sure wheter I sould have taken  the knight with my rook or with my pawn if the game had kept going...

What do you guys thinK?Undecided

In my opinion you should have used your rook. You won't allow the black rook to get into your 1-rank now. Perhaps he can do this later by f7-f5, but he's gonna lose some pawns too.

I would probably take with the rook.   That prevents black from obtaining an open file for his rook and also threatens black's c pawn.

Rook definitely--preserve your control of an open file.  It's not a resignation point, so I don't know why he resigned (maybe because you are a pawn up).

rook

if exd5, i think the best move for black would be Re2 to start attacking white's queenside pawns. the pawn structure is better left alone because the white c-pawn has issues to protect the valued passed d-pawn.  also, a passed pawn is good, but when the rook is behind it not in front of it. somewhere along the way you will have to move the rook out of the way and the pawn won't be defended. If the white rook were on the d1, d2, or d3 square i would take with the pawn.  plus the open file stuff, attacking c-pawn.

pawn because u can  e4xnd5 then d5 to d6 and he can't stop it with his rook because it is not defended then rook c7 then pawn d7 then after that do rook c8(the rook is defended by the pawn and it pins the rook down to the king so black either trades off rooks or moves it to his king his rook and then white would trade off rooks then d8 and have a queen)by the way i havent found a flaw in this yet because blacks rook is undefended.=)

Rook! Attacking the c-pawn, after c5-c4 you play g2-g4 to prevent f7-f5. Endgame must be won when your king will enter the center.

Certainly taking with the rook is very solid but perhaps pawn takes? Its a bold move but deserves much anaylisis. Either way blacks postion looks bleak.

Almost always when given the choice, you should capture with a piece instead of a pawn. Pieces can be brought back, pawns cannot.
Marshal_Dillon
Capture with the rook. It keeps the opposing rook tied down behind the pawn lines where it can't attack anything.

Use the rook let the black remain on the 8th while diminishing his pawns. Also if you capture with the rook yuour pawn structure will be weakened

I think it differs per situation. Creating a passed pawn can be useful and gaining tempo with your pawns can too. But disrupting your formation can be a problem. In this given situation I would definately agree with taking it with the rook. This leaves his rook locked for a few moves instead of opening up.

ii THiiNK THE ROOK CAS IT KEEPS YA PAWN CHiiAN AND GIVES YU CONTROL OF THE OPEN FILE

if ur a defencive player ,with a rook because it prevents the black rook from entering ur teretory . if ur a attacking player ,with the pawn because u get a passer
ashiqmohammed
but i prefer with d rook

I would try both taking, but it is a draw position, anyway...

This would have been a time consuming game to play out and he probably didn't think it was worth the effort. Both sides had good chances, but the end was still a long way off.

Rxd5, as exd5 allows Re2! with lots of counterplay

After Rxd5 he has to play his rook to a passive position and you can bring your king towards the center

Definitely rook to block his room from controlling the powerful e-file, plus you threaten his c-pawn, not giving him time to move his king to the center.
