Hi Annabelle, I'd be happy to help. The first thing to remember is that you use the rook to gradually narrow down the area available to the opposing king. For example, if your rook is on, say, e5 and the opposing king is on, say, c7, you have limited him to moving within that top left hand square. Using your king to protect your rook, you gradually narrow the square that he can move in. If you would like more specific help, particularly for the final mate, let me know.

Hi Annabelle. I know of a good tutorial, The King and Rook Checkmate. Enjoy! Smile

Hi Annabelle,

I realise that I am a bit late on this one, but it is a speciality of mine.  Is it possible on this site to set up a board with only a few pieces to demonstrate the technique?

Cheers David.

There are actually several correct solutions to both puzzles.  For example, in the top one, 1.Rd5 Kf8 2.Rg5 Ke8 3.Rg8 mate.  Also, 1.Rf5 Kd8 2.Rc5 Ke8 3.Rc8 mate.

In the second one, the Rook can move to any square on the c-file except c8.  To give "incorrect" for any moves other than the ones given in the solution is very misleading.

Apologies, but I've never come across this term before.  I think I understand what it means but could someone clarify?

Thank you.
