Stalemate is when it's a player's turn to move where they are not in check and have no legal moves.

The white king isn't in check and all other squares are covered by black pieces.

ValkyrieWarrior_Tally

Ohh, I see. But surely it IS checkmate? Coz the King can't move anywhere without a piece checking him...

@Martin_Stahl Hewo??

For it to be checkmate, king needs to be in check. This is not the case here. White is on the move but he can't make a move and his king is not in check = stalemate.

Ahh, I see. Thanks @nklristic! x

Exactly. It's actually "check and mate", and can be translated by "the King is dead" from the Persian version of it, I believe.

Check means the King is under threat (but probably means originaly "King" as in cheikh), then mate (dead/death): can't escape that threat.

Hui ValkyrieWarrior_Tally,it is stalemate because the white king cannot move

Yeah, it's a draw. So... be sure in future games to leave a square for the opponent to move to without them being in check while ur trying to mate them. U have to make sure they're in check when u play the last move & they can't move anymore without being in check. Everybody has gone through that & everybody has hated that rule in the beginning.

Thanks everyone, it really helped!! 🥰 xx

Yea the king can’t move anywhere and even if there is far more material it is a draw. I heard chinese chess requires you actually killing the king though…

The white can't make any move, but is not in check. I'm beginner, but in all early lessons they said we should be very careful about this kind of stalemate.
