It is a realistic endgame that can happen:

When it does happen in an endgame, it would be more likely to happen like this:

White has to promote to a knight as any other piece would get immediately forked on h6. Not moving the pawn will result in its immediate capture, and both cases lead to a drawn 2 knights vs king endgame where checkmate can't be forced. 3 knights can usually beat one but it's extremely difficult.

Both players were around or under 2000 I think it said.

That figure probably came from Fine. It's actually twenty one (see e.g. #12).

Fine gave longest mate figures for each of his "elementary" endgames; KQvK, KRvK, KBBvK, KBNvK, KNNNvK and KNNvK. All were close, but only two (KQvK and KNNvK) were correct.
