What is the most complicated endgame

Sort:
SmyslovFan

Take a look at the following endgame played last week.  Try working it all out without the use of an engine. It's insanely complicated!

1.Kf5 Rb5+ 2.Kg4 Rb4+ 3.Kf3 Nd7 4.Qh8+ Ke7 5.g7 Bf6 6.g8N+ Ke6 7.Qh3+.

You don't seem to be taking the 8 hour time limit too seriously.

That's another inspiring Magnus game! I like these games where both players are thinking on their own. They make good study material. That being said, I don't really like the kind of theory today that stretches past move 20, but I also don't want 960, as the starting positions are weird and often not the nice, balanced +0.2 that you see in regular chess. Bottom line, the opening is a legitimate part of the game, and I find theoretical battles to be interesting. I enjoy things like Golubev's queen sacrifice in the Dragon, and Karpov's ... Ke7 in the Caro-Kann. I also prepare little opening bombs for my opponents if I can. But the moment that the opening pushes the middlegame aside, I lose interest.

Q vs R is not so ez if & only if the R side knows all the trix.

@rychessmaster1:  7...Kf6 is illegal. You have a bishop on f6.

What was 9 Kf1?!

It was White's 9th move. What did you think it was?

I mean it was a wasted move

Were you expecting a different move?

I think 8 Ke2 was better

That would give me a draw, not extra tempo.  (8...Re4+)

Somebody asked Daniel King that question and he said "The one I don't know" or have an uncomfortable feel for in a game. Dumb question. Well there are no dumb questions. Whatever.Undecided

The_Ghostess_Lola

Yes, but what is the most implicated congame ?

Sorry, you just lost this game. With your latest move, 13...Rb6, you changed White's original mate in 549 to a mate in 306.

You lasted longer than I had expected. Your first 12 moves for Black were correct.

n9531l

Here's the position after White's 13th move. Check out the DTM (distance to mate) for Black's choices.

Bishop and Knight vs nothing is hard but doable. After many practices I've come to learn how to position the enemy king in the corner and driving him across the board if necessary. Maximum number of moves should be around 30 or something, so it's not the worst. Again, practice. 6 months is probably accurate."

My coach taught me this in a week by assigning it as homework and telling me to read the relevant section in Dvoretsky.
I also read 100 ENDGAMES YOU MUST KNOW, but successfully mated her in our next lesson.
She told me that, when she was a little girl, her coach had her do this exercise with a chess clock ticking away...
