I'm learning to play chess again (~800 ELO). I play defensively in my opening, but the analysis wants me to trade pieces often. Is this the right strategy for me to focus on?

Hi Zanthiel!

If the analysis suggests trading it is probably correct for the given positions in question but broad generalities like “trade pieces often” isn't a good principle to follow, the best ideas are always made within the context of each position in question.

If you're relearning chess I recommend joining the beginners chess club! Plenty of other like minded players learning the game and some of us offer free help learning the game (offering advice, game reviews, and even some live lessons. We’d be happy to have you and work on chess with you!

Hi jg2648,

Thanks for the advice; I will continue to see if trade gives me the upper hand in my position.

I will definitely check out the beginner club!

That's a great read, Russ! I’ve noticed my game opening is slower because I’m defensive, but as the game progresses, I feel more confident.

Playing defensively isn't inherently wrong, but you should aim to maintain an active position. Developing pieces to strong squares while keeping your position solid is ideal.

On your level, trading pieces is generally not bad.
But what is very important is not to give pieces away for nothing.

magipi

All this is pretty irrelevant. The only important thing is to not play games like this one. Don't play random moves.

Do not trust chess engines too much. Such advices are perfect play point of view. Chess should be a game of creativity, strategy, and imagination.

i looked at your profile, this is my advice

. Don’t play super defensively. If you never try to attack, the only way you’ll ever win is when your opponent blunders pieces. Try to attack (don’t get so carried away that you forget to defend though).

.Don’t play bots, they don’t play like humans

.Learn basic tactics such as forks, pins and scewers

Zanthiel

Thank you, everyone! I've been playing bots because, as Magipi mentioned, I've got a mate in 3 moves, and he's right!

My opens seem careless, and I'm sticking to the e4, kf3, and bc4 to castle early to structure my game.
