Important Question!!

Hi everyone! So I've been getting into chess lately, reading books, watching videos etc etc.
I'm really bad at it ATP but I intend to get better.

But the question I have is, I'm learning stuff like Scholar's mate, Fried liver attack, etc openings. And I just won a match with it. (I'm quite low ELO so it seems to have worked)

However, is it unfair to use that opening? I used the Fried liver attack against someone and to some miracle they played exactly like how I learned it (from Gotham) I feel bad for using it now 😭

If your opponent didn’t counter the attack properly, it means there’s room for them to learn and improve.

ah i understand, thank you! if i learn theory and these sort of tricky attacks and win at this level of low elo it's not bad?

No that’s the way the game is meant to be played. The better you get, the more nuanced the openings will become.

I suffer from extreme guilt about winning, so I get what you mean about "fairness". But it's your opponent's responsibility not to lose! You are entitled to make whatever moves you like, and they have to learn what to do about it. In fact, if you win, in a way you are doing them a favour by showing them the weakness in the moves they chose, so they can learn to choose better next time.

But don't rely on trappy openings. You can get a few wins that way against the unwary, but the problem with relying on fried-liver style attacks is that you soon bump into a layer of players who know the trap and won't fall for it.
