Lichess is Better Than Chess.com

New Players should use Lichess because it follows the rule of fide and chess .com follows of American chess federation. For New Players chess.com can be better because of its interface but when you are 200 to 300 and have developed interest in playing chess you should use lichess. And if you have budget chess.com can't even be a chance but lichess is free.

im so frustrated with chess.com interface. it's terrible. for the money they charge for an membership you'd think they could hire a UX analyst.

only things that are better on lichess are the database, the studies and being free... otherwise the UI is horrible

There was a time when if you mentioned that site, you'd get severely censored here. Given the post is 12 days old and hasn't been, I don't think it will be.

Of course, the huge advantage everyone will say about lichess is that everything they have there is free, i.e. there are no features behind a paywall.

Whether the training courses they have there is as good as those of this site - you'd have to take them and come back and answer. The same obviously with chessable, which offers some courses that cost money and you'd have to ask are they worth it?

I do generally find watching chess games easier on that site than on this one, but you have to find the good games to watch in the first place.

This site hosts "Titled Tuesday" which is one of the most entertaining chess events to watch. They used to host the PRO Chess League and I'd love to see that make a comeback. I am not sure if the reason it stopped was the number of players who had been found to cheat in it.

Guys this site is chess.com I don’t think we should discuss this here…

I think most people should use both... Lichess has some great free tools, but a sub par interface. That being said, if you can bare the ergonomics, it's a great tool to have a long side chess.com.

The problem is that both sides seem to champion extremely high-speed chess far too much.

Both support having time controls with increment but seemingly don't want people to use it, and for whatever reason, it seems most of the top players don't want to play with it, even against each other.

That chess.com has shelved what was the wonderful PRO chess league (after changing its format multiple times and moving it off its fantastic Wednesday night slot) in favour of more high-speed chess events, and in any case made it far more difficult to watch players, has made it worse in some ways than it used to be.

chess.com tries to "force" top players to play here exclusively by making streaming contracts with them, and does the same with other players. I think chess.com should make people want to be here, not try to force them.

Of course, lots of people have accounts on both sites, including some top players.

New players shouldn't be thinking about "FIDE" or "USCF" - that's for experienced OTB tournament players to worry about.

New players should be learning the names of the pieces, how they move and capture, and how to deliver checkmate. You can learn those things on either site.
