meaning of Returned Pawn

I saw ‘Returned Pawn’ mentioned in an article and don’t know & can’t find the meaning.

English is not my mother tongue but I would think: you take a pawn in a gambit. In the following moves you can chose to try to hold on to that pawn, defend it. Or at a sudden moment you can return the pawn. You stop defending it and let your opponent take it. That could be the returned pawn.
