Notation

I was sort of getting to grips with Chess.com notation.  A week or so ago I bought my first book Irving Cherney's Logical Chess.  I forget who on here I have to thank for that but anyways....  I now find there's a whole new world of notation out there.  I googled and thought if I print out my English notation diagram, tuck it in my book, I will be able to make a start on Ch1.  Oh no.....   there's two possibilities for each square depending whether you're white or black?   I used to think I had half a brain.....  How on earth do you 'read' these books?

I'll leave it to others to defend descriptive notation since I loathe it myself.  Logical Chess is available in algebraic if you look around.  Oh wait, I think my Batsford edition is in "figurine" algebraic which substitutes a little symbol for the piece.  Pretty intuitive, but some don't care for it.  Good luck with your studying!

I honestly don't know what you're talking about....   Are you being sarcy with your 'Good luck with your studying!'?  (It's hard to know who your friends are in these forums.)  Algebraic, figurine algebraic...   Is that even a thing?  I'll watch the video when I feel stronger I think -  thankyou kiwi
