Its a few months since the posts above - I just tried it and it worked to play against the computer from the position I set up. There was an update a couple of days ago so try it again now.
I'm with @flipiwin that it would be great to play a custom board against a friend.
I was trying to set up an opening vs the Morphy bot, 1 d4 e5, to see how it deals with the Englund gambit, but it treats the position as if it is black's move. If I start the custom position with only d4, it treats it as white's move, so it just has a central pawn and a knight developed before I get a chance to move.
If anyone is wondering I loaded a custom human v human game. I wanted to carry on an expired game with a friend so the instructions are geared for that.
- Analise an old game, hit the download button at the bottom
- Copy the FEN data
- Create new game custom game
- Make sure it's set to a "Daily" time option or the following won't all work
- Check it's unrated
- Change custom setup to "FEN" and paste your FEN data
- Make sure you're set to the right player color
- Play
- Regret going through all that just to lose in the next move

You can't do that with the app. You would need to play with a browser.

If chess.com does not read this forum, someone should send this post to them. They need to do what lichess does. If you go to lichess.org/editor you will find exactly what we need. I did it a few minutes ago since I want to teach lessons. I removed all pieces from the board and put on two kings and a pawn and it worked. I am also planning to teach a friend who knows nothing about chess. I put the queen in the very center and was able to draw arrows to show all squares she protected.

You can play a custom position with an "odds" game. An "odds" game can only be played unrated against a friend.

Chess.com get your UI sorted it really needs work.
I forgot I had a Lichess account. I just tried lichess custom setup. It was fast. I needed it to extend solved puzzles and explore "what happens next. In other words, I will keep my Gold membership here for games and puzzles and lichess for custom setups."
