Typical rating progression pace?
There are different ways to play/train. Are you a "casual" who just has fun playing chess, or are you in pursuit of excellence, studying all there is to know about openings, strategy, endgames...
For me, chess is just a game I enjoy, I don't seek expertise and I worry about other things off the board, so I will improve with practice but much more slowly than others.
I've been playing for a touch over 3 years and have gone from about 700 (I knew how to move the pieces and little else) to about 2200 bullet and 1950 with longer time controls. I got to about 1800 (Blitz and bullet) within a year and since then my progress has slowed but not stopped.
Impressive, and very encouraging to read that you broke the 1800 mark after 12 months. Well done.
Well, this is something that complicates topics like this, you have people who don't tell the truth.
No one gets to 1800 blitz and bullet in just 12 months. Not if they're starting as a real beginner. That's completely silly.
If they told you the truth, it would be more like
"oh, yeah, I learned to play when I was 10 years old, and played for 5 years and got better, but I wasn't taking it seriously. After I took it seriously I was 1800 in 1 year, but before that year I was 1600"
Also, Mariners said he got to about 1800 blitz in a year... looked at his account, blitz games played: 29
lol
Its an individual thing and you shouldnt be obsessed with it. Focus your energy on learning and everthing will come at the right time. Im pretty satisfied with my progression, I started playing chess mid December 2020 and six months later Im almost 1600. I have no idea how long it took me to reach milestones such as 1000, 1200, 1300, 1400, etc since I didnt kept track of my rating, instead I enjoyed the game and learned stuff day by day.
Hi All,
I know this is a subjective question based on individual effort, ability, dedication, etc - but typically, how long does it take to reach each milestone?
Example:
<500 (instantly)
500-750 (perhaps after a week or two of understanding some basic chess principles like controlling the center, not opening with A3/H3, etc)
750-1000 (1-3 months of play)
1200 (3-4 months)
1300 (5 months??)
1400 (6-8 months??)
and so on.
Or put differently, if you are rated 1400/1500 or beyond - after you reached 1,000. How long did it take you approximately to progress through each 100+ milestone?
I started playing Chess in February, and over the past 90 days have managed to improve my score from 670 to 1225, but I'd also say I've done a fair bit more than the average patzer when it comes to trying to improve (analyzing games, watching youtube videos, etc) but have no idea of the 'typical pace'.
i started playing chess this febuary i spent 2 weeks at around 680-700 then i skyrocketed in rating points went from 700 to 1100 in 2 months then i got stuck at 1100-1120 for a month then my rating got higher again but this time i was stuck between 1170-1200 for roughly about 2 weeks after that rating got too 1250 and then i was stuck between 1230-1250 for like a week and a half and then i went up alot of points now im currently a 1308 at the time of this post
From 0 to 1600 in six months. I will write the time it took me to other milestones (1000, 1200, 1400) when I log in my account on computer.

Keep in mind that online ratings are different from the OTB/in-person ratings (although there is some correlation between Chess.com ratings and OTB ratings). In terms of my OTB USCF standard rating:
I started out with a provisional USCF rating of 844 at the age of 9 years.
One year later, my rating went up to 1164 (or a 320-point rating gain) at the age of 10 years.
Another year later, my rating had gone up even further to 1463 (or a 299-point rating gain) at the age of 11 years.
One year later, my rating only went up 51 points to 1514 at the age of 12.
At that point, my OTB USCF rating only went up by 100 points per year until I cracked 2000 USCF at the age of 17.
I took a hiatus from OTB chess when I went to college and returned to the board at the age of 24/25 years and cracked 2100 USCF at that point. I have been bouncing around between mid-2000s and low 2100s ever since.
TL-DR Version: It took me two years to go from 800 to 1400 OTB.
Its taken me a year to get to 500 played a 12 year old the other day that had 3 queens on the board and wiped the floor with me.
Picked it up again a month ago, played two games a day, stayed at 1000... Got my badge for Rapid 1000. Told my daughters!!
Started having a few beers and playing 20 games a day and pretending to analyze and am now 750.
For my first 50 games of Rapid I was 50:50 with white, and 40:60 with black.
What I've learned over the past week of 60 odd-games and minus 270 rating points.
A. Yes I still hang pieces
B. Full concentration required
C. It's not Clash of Clans, and I can't attack 5 times an hour and be any good
D. Bit premature to Google Fide ACM titles (50 bucks if you’re 1100 on their platform in case your wondering)
* play mindfully - real chess not hope chess, as someone wise (Daniel Heisman - it's a five minute read) wrote
* play less games in one binge /try slower time controls
* analyze your games for 30 mins each. Play them again against yourself
I reckon I should play 4 games a day, at my best time of the day. If I can win most days, i’ll are you back at 1,000 in a couple of months.
Last word from me: it's now fun. I've lost many games that why get grumpy?
Interesting this topic is still active, 2 years on from when I first posted it!
To answer my own question, this is what my own rating progression looked like, starting out as an adult beginner. It might help someone get a sense for improvement time. I do think I've progressed at a decent pace although by no means the quickest - I've played against several people who have started out much later than I who are higher rated than me now! As I said in my original post 2 years ago - it'll all depend on how much time you can afford to put into studying the game!
My Blitz rating progress for those interested (Rapid was faster as I think that rating pool is a little inflated):
625 = 3 weeks.
800 = 7 weeks.
1000 = 2.5 months.
1200 = 4 months. (Around the time I posted this very topic 2 years ago!)
1400 = 5 months.
1500 = 8 months.
1600 = 1 year, 1 month.
1700 = 1 year, 6 months.
1800 = 2 years, 1 month... and counting.

Wow you've been playing online for quite a while...
Playing for 4 months mostly daily and admitted I do not always use analysis board , trying to break 1000. Starting to do more puzzles and go back and study openings and working on the basics
I learned chess less than a year ago and I have peaked my top rapid rating after 8 months at 1430 and truthfully get to 1400 was pretty easy for my case and I think it is why I'm currently having a slump but I think with hard effort I can break the 1500 before my one anniversary at playing chess
I got to 1200 after 10 months from 0, 1500 in 6 months from 1200. 4yrs later I'm now 2130
okay.
I have been very dedicated and went from not knowing the rules to 800 in 2 weeks playing the computer before playing online. Then I gained 80 points per week (sometimes more, sometimes less) playing 2-3 hours per day. I started to stagnate after 4 months and reaching 1650 in rapid. I then played less and stop studying. I am now at 1800 rapid and 1580 blitz after 9 months of playing. I would like to reach 2000 in the coming months. The main element that helped me in my progression is: I always play the same lines and always analyze my games. I have a word document with 150 pages of openings. Each time someone does something I do not know I turn the engine on at the end of the game and write the line in my word document. That helped me feeling confortable in the first 10 moves but also to have a good understanding of strategic concepts in various positions. In comparison with other 1800, I am strong in openings, strong in strategy, a bit weak in tactics.
800 in one year, and stayed there for four more.
Then went from 1100-1600 in two months, hit 1800 8 months later, 1900 one month later, and 2000 two months after that. Two months after 2000 I hit 2100, a month later 2200. and I've stayed high 2100-2200 for around five months now but almost hit 2300 a week ago.
So basically 1100-1800 in around a year and then another year to go from 1800-2200.
Hey stupid!
its future you! Here to tell you to study more chess because you’ve regressed!

that's awesome progression
+100 to +200/year is normal
Here is a chart of progress from 1600 to 2500

A bit off topic, but his rating really fluctuated monthly 5 years ago... from 2100 to 1800 in a couple of months and then again to 2100.
In puzzle solving , the criteria of scoring ,some time I get 5 marks some time get 11 . How this rated.
