If there is chance in something then, if you do the same things, a different result may occur. Chess isn't like that, it is a deterministic game, like txc2004 said. While it is true you can be "lucky"(I wouldn't even call it luck because even if your opponent plays badly, it isn't bad luck, it is just poor playing. It's not like he couldn't control his moves)when it comes to matchmaking, your actions are still not affected by chance if you know what you are doing. Also, in official tournaments, the matchmaking is made mathematically, so at least OTB chess is absolutely deterministic.

Chess is not a game of chance. A game of chance is one where you do not have control of the outcome. Blackjack is a game of chance. If they deal you a Jack and a 6, and the Dealer a King and an 8, and the next card is a 7, you cannot win, whether you hit or stand. That is because Blackjack is a game of chance.
In chess, you have total control of your position, and if you play perfect chess from move 1, the absolute worst you can do is draw.Complete skill factor that your king survived. You are not relying on chance. When you sit down in the starting position, you control your own destiny. Your king will finish upright with perfect play by you!
