Opening names: Defense / Attack

Silly question.  There are many openings with attack/ defense in the name

Max Lange attack, King's Indian attack, Austrian attack etc.... are all openings for white

King's indian Defense, French Defense, Sicilian defense etc... are all openings for black

you get the idea.

Are there exceptions to the rule that an opening with 'attack' in the name is a white opening and an opening with 'defense' in the name is a black opening?

The attack does refer to a White opening (moving first, therefore attacking) and Defence as Black's reply (defending). However, the moves can be very similar. Nf3 is a strong opening for White, generally referred to as Reti, followed by g3, Bg2, O-O referred to as KIA. As Black, similar moves: Nf6, g6, Bg7, O-O are the same (well very similar) moves referred to as the Alekhine Defence, or with an important variation PIRC Defence.

So, as far as I know, Attack always refers to White openings and Defence to Black openings. But the way pieces move can be similar for either. HOWEVER, I wouldn't get too concerned or hung up on their names. Much more important to understand the theory/principal behind why the moves are being made.

Good luck.  happy.png

Thanks!  I agree that the names are not as important - I was interested in this as a bit of trivia more than a fact that will help me play the game.

I feel that the classical perspective was that black was always on the back-foot and must assume a defensive role (I think even Lasker says something to this effect) and so it seems by tradition openings for black are referred to as 'defenses'.  But many 'defenses' are quite sharp and black is not playing just to hold in a lot of cases.

That's why I was curious if there are any exceptions, rare openings or variations in an opening that are referred to as an attack for black or a defense for white.

Just for sake of curiosity wink.png
