Setting up pieces in world record time

Sort:
Pawnghost

According to the 2014 World Record book, the fastest time in setting up chess pieces to their starting position is 48 seconds.. Seems like an easy record to beat. I know I could set the pieces up faster than that.

Riplovich

Too late.Ive got the record now.It only took me 47 seconds.

Contact the Guiness record people!

ChessOfPlayer

That's not the record.  Maybe if all the pieces were scattered at random across a room.

The brief writeup in the book doesn't give any details. I'm now doubting its accuracy.

2000mushroom

lol. Usually with the pieces right beside me, I can do it in less than 25 seconds.

Update: The 2015 edition of Guinness World Records, page 110, states "Fastest time to arrange a chess set was by Ray Butler in 41.87 seconds in Las Vegas Nevada on Sept 18 2013. The fastest time for a team of two is 41.24 seconds." Hmm, why was the team of two nearly the same time as one person? 2000mushroom, you should go for it, vie for the record!

BigKingBud

I'm pretty sure most of us set our chess sets up in around that time, every time we set up our boards.  Right?
I mean, I know I can 'set a set up' in like 30 secs tops.  Seems a real genuine try(by some practiced, quick handed folks) would result in under 10 secs.

How does the source define "arrange"?

Edit: According to this site the record is 20.80 seconds, with video proof. Which still looks pretty slow.

Edit again: Here's a note left beneath the video that clears things up.

Unfortunately we cannot accept your evidence for this challenge as you have not followed the guidelines completely. The chess pieces must be randomized in a bowl at least 300mm (11.81 inches) away from the board. Only one hand may be used and the other must remain behind the challengers back.

glamdring27

Why would anyone setup a chess board with one hand behind their back?  I'd also take a second or two out of the time to move the bowl closer.

Pawnghost

Those guidelines make it a lot harder; that explains it, thanks.

CalexTheAwesome

I’m about to go for the record

Arisktotle

I hold the digital record: 0.00000000000000012 seconds.

It's always good to have some sort of skill to fall back on, but I can't help but wonder how many companies offer the service of setting up chess pieces on an industrial scale.

I had to look it up online, alas the query returned no results. It would appear that no company is currently in the market. Pure blue ocean, a pioneers market; big money to be made for a man with a dash of grit.

jackmalcolm01

I just got 18.824

there has to be a mistake

MrOOFChess
Someone on YouTube made a video beating the record (Liam Thompson) Although as soon as he broke the record, someone else broke it and stole the record 😱
bonky_kat

yes, Liam Thompson did break it, but that was a two person record, the 1 person record is right now 29.85 seconds by a girl from india

to jackmalcolm01: you have to have the pieces in a bowl randomly scattered and the bowl must be placed 300 mm away from the board and u must use only one hand with the other hand behind the back

Seth_Isaac

took 48.76 seconds to make both sides. 24.38 seconds each

bonky_kat

to seth_isaac, thats not the idea, you have to make both sides in record time, not only one side to qualify
