Bad Bishop.. very naughty

I guess I'll give this a shot. I just finished a game, and lost of course (seems all I am able to do this week).

Would like to know what ideas bounce back from the vast blue yonder.

My opponent is significantly stronger than myself, but it seemed I was able to keep up with him (at least for longer than usual.. I'm often lost by move 20 in our games). This was an unrated game so we had an ongoing dialogue throughout the game on where the position stood and who benefited from what.

You're attacking on the king side so the bishop is better posted near your queenside king.  Advancing pawns are better protected by rooks behind them.  Your move (20. Rc1) is the right move (for me).  Your comment on 21. Rhg1 is right; the knight won't do anything there.  I guess the better move is Rxc5, attacking doubled rooks are dangerous.  It's not a bad bishop for me, but you should have taken that pawn (dxe6) and try to make the position open.  Regarding your comment on 36. Kc4: the g pawn can be taken cared for by the f pawn.  This is also the reason why dxe6 (remember?) was the better move: you could have pushed your f pawn (f pawn should be at least on the same rank as the h pawn to repel the advance of his g pawn).  ...one of the many problems in end games...  Wink

Thank you both. Charlie91.. excellent summation I believe.
17. c4 just doesn't make much sense to me. I think this was my first real mistake. 17. f4 or 17. Nf4 were both very playable I think.

21. Rhg1 is just a head turner. I remember looking at the board and not being able to find a reasonable move, and the thought occurred to me... a lame plan is better than no plan. Problem is.. I moved Rc1 for a reason... I should have followed up. 21. Rxc5 i think would have been best.

22. a3 - I can't even bring myself to comment on this move. Once again Rxc5 was certainly playable.

28. dxe6... yes yes yes. I think dxe6 was the more sound play.

30. b4 was mentioned to me, and interestingly enough it could lead to interesting play.

33. Bxa6 would have been very interesting, getting two passed pawns with the king out in front.. and the enemy knight way off on the h-file. This may have been my best chance in this game.

41. f4 would have been another rather dynamic move, threatening to create a passed pawn in the center.

Interestingly enough...  43. Bxh5 does not save the game as I thought it might.

43. Bxh5 gxh4 44. Bg4 Ng5 and white loses his bishop to stop the passed pawn.
