Perhaps, Kevin. The difference between the 99% and the remaining 1% is that for the 99% it is a game where the outcome provides pleasure. For the remaining 1% it is their way of supporting themselves and a family so they have to include this factor in their calculations.
As for soccer, at least don't include Seattle. The team here has sold out all 32,000 available season tickets and (not surprisingly) all of their home games since joining the league three years ago. The Mariners in contrast sold 10,000 season tickets this year. I know many Americans having a hard time following a sport that doesn't include "Clap now" screens, frequent breaks, cheer leaders, halftime shows and silly dances. Personally, if I want to get entertained I go to a theatre. But you may feel differently.
winning is always more acceptable than drawing is'nt it? the entire idea of competition in games is not to be mutually benefiting ... it's winning ... its not war where you take a draw on the left flank to crush the enemy on the right ... chess is a game for 99.9% of even people who know the rules ... play to win ... real and arranged draws have prevented the sport from expanding into countries like the USA where BTW soccer cant find a foothold either.
