failing after openings

I am not an expert but I can play more thana couple of openings and defenses, and I usually keep in sight the principles of developing and not moving the same piece twice, fight for the center, etc... but I have realized that I have lost the last few games even after getting a better position around move 15, and even feeling comfortable after developing a certain opening. In this game I made a mistake, but I think that before Ng4 I was a bit lost... can you guys throw some basic principles of the middle game, as well as check this one out and tell me?

I believe 12Bh6 was much better than 12Bh4. After 12Bh6 the rook will likely move and then 13Nh4 is very strong with the N headed for f5 AND with the threat of Qg4+ and perhaps mate at g7 if black doesnt defend . However after 12Bh6 and 13Nh4 I would much prefer white.  Study complete games that come from the openings you frequently play and this will help you learn how to play the middlegames and endings that frequently arise from them. Euwe's two books on the middlegame are classics but may be hard to find: Middlegame :Book One and : Middlegame: Book Two

First of all your opponent made a mistake with 11...Nxd7 (He should have played 11...fxg4 and recover from a double pawn).

Anyway on move 12.Bh4 - you ahould played 12.Bh6 - that's a much stronger position for the bishop (It blocks the black king & forces a black move - which keeps the momentum at your side).

15. f4 - what was the purpose of weakening your king's defense. Better to develop your queen & other rook to the game. Besides you created an isolated pawn at the center.

17. Ng4 - obviously you missed the comming fork. A better way was to exchange queens, and then capture f6 with rook & bishop Vx defending bishop.
