I've checkmated the king but it shows as draw for some reason?

Am I missing something? Because as far as I can see I (black) have put white in checkmate and this was against a chess bot. Is there a glitch with the bot?

If the king cant move without getting matee, its a draw. Its what you aim for when losing.

oh I see, i still dont get why stalemates aren't considered as checkmates but thanks for clarifying my doubt

Just the game rules, and nothing more than that.

For the checkmate to happen, there needs to be a check. So:

1. There is a check and there is no legal move that will continue the game = checkmate

2. There is NO check and there is no legal move that will continue the game = Stalemate = Draw

Here we have situation 2. King is not attacked, so there is no check. White doesn't have a single legal move, so it is a stalemate.

Here is a bit more about it:

Yeah… the white king is not currently in check

KingOfBrilliancy

It's not checkmate.

It's called stalemate, which ends the game in a draw.

HUGE difference.

Yep! But we all learn!!

FYI: the right thing to do (assuming there were no other pieces) before the stalemating error is as follows:

1. Qe2+

2. Kg3, Qg4+

3. Kh2, Kf3

4. Kh1, Qg2#

Look again. White has no moves but **is not in check **. That is a stalemate, and a draw

In endgames like that, try to make sure it opponent always either

Is in check, or
Has a legal move.
