Hi fellow chess fanatics!

tHis is a game I played today and my (probably) my first win ever against another serious chess player (plus my "analysis" if it classifies as such). I could've probably played done better but a win is a win. So what do you think?

Loomis

You definitely go for the initiative which is good. There were a some places you could have played better.

10. Nxc7  just wins a pawn. If 10. ... Kxc7 11. Ng4+ attacks the queen.  Your plan at move 10 of Bc4 and Nxf7 is hope chess. There's no reason to believe your opponent will just let you do that.

 11. Bg5 wins the queen. The queen is pinned to the king and if Qxg5 then Nxf7+ forks the king and queen.

You comment after 14. Be5 "and now the queen is trapped." What if black plays 14. ... Bg7. I think better for you was 14. Bg5+ forking the king and knight.

I think you left a lot of opportunities out there. On the other hand, you didn't give your opponent any opportunities to take material from you or attack your king -- mainly by always keeping pressure against your opponents king and other pieces. I would say keep playing aggressively and keep your eye out for those tactics!

I like your final comment "I was feeling good about this position," as if you had a grip on the center and a strong knight. You were up a queen and roughly 12 pawns! There are plenty of things for you to look over and you should go through Loomis' suggestions (11. Bg5 would have been cool!). I will make one comment though. There was no reason for you to start advancing your kingside pawns in the end. You have a huge kingside pawn majority, but all black's pieces were on the kingside as well. Advancing the kingside pawns will simply present your suffering opponent with some counterattacking options. I think you should have pushed your gigantic queenside majority to push your opponent against the wall. You probably should have castled queenside at this point also.

Yeah, I went as far as the 6th move where you should have played the obvious Be5.

I laughed at that comment, too.  Smile

Okay thanks for the tips! Im not that good at endgame play yet, what would be the best way to improve my endgame play?

I also struggle with endgames.  Not to sound like a salesman, but Silman's Complete Endgame Course has been greatly helpful.  It breaks down information on a need to know basis depending on your "rating".  Lots of basic things are just a matter of having it explained and you will think, "Oh yeah.  Duh?!  Why didn't I realize this a while ago?"

6 Be5 and black can resign then.

14. Bg7 protects the black Queen.

Interesting how no pawns were lost.
