Oh so close

This game was well played by both sides.  I lost in the end but I wanted to share it with anyone who wants to see it and comment.

13.Ke1 a mistake waste of time. You have to get your king to a safe position ASAP. so Ke2 is better. Then Re1 then Kf1.

 18.Bf3 slight mistake. I prefer f3 and then Kf2. Get your king out of the attack from the rooks. Besides f3 and Be4 is kinda blocks the e-file. 

 22.Kf1 is a tactical error. Losses a pawn. Your pieces are uncordinated and I am not sure what is a good move here. Maybe Kd2 aiming for Kc1 if Black checks with the rook.

 I won't comment any more (I am too tired) ....till I notice 40. Bxc6 is ouright blunder

 

With your 2 bishops you are doing very well till you make blunder.

10...Qxd1 - I guessed wrong.


9...Bxe5 was a big mistake. Your best reply was 10.Bxb7 Nd7 11.dxe5. But even 10.dxe5 trades pieces, offers a queen trade, and makes his rooks vulnerable. All things that are better for you than him.

 

10...Qe7 leaves the queens on-board and sets a trap (If 11.Bxb7 Qb4+ ties up the game). But if White sees through the simple trap, 11.O-O c6 Qd4 +/- and Black's position is very tough to defend.  10...Qxd1 11.Kxd1 c6 12.Be3 Ne7 and Black's still down a pawn and the bishop pair but White has no immediate threats. So I think initiating the queen trade was a better plan for him.

 

19...Rae8 20.Rhe1 - "Connecting my rooks"

 

Hmm... your rooks already were connected. They are long range pieces... they don't need to touch to feel connected. Smile After 20...Bxf5 gxf5 21.Kf3 you threaten Bxa7 and your 1 pawn + bishop pair advantage has been converted into an even better 2 pawn advantage.

 

24.h3 - Connecting the pawns for defense 

 

These "connecting" moves seem to be your undoing. 24.Rxe3 Rxe3 25.Rh8+ and now you're set to win back one pawn. After 24.h3 Rxe1 25.Rxe1 Rxe1 26.Kxe1 the game is even. But you did catch this on the second go with 25.Rxe3.

 

27.Ra8 

 

Almost! B+ for effort. The key was to see that Rd7+ is a fork, but it's stopped by the enemy knight, so 27.b4! Ne6 28.Rd7+ wins a pawn.

 

40.Bxc6 - "Sacrifices must be made" 

 

I guess you don't like draws? It's not sound, but it's a creative idea, and that counts for something. There were actually a couple moments when you had winning chances. For example, if instead of 50.Ra5+ you played 50.h4+ because now your opponent won't be able to play Rb2 to stop your pawn from promoting.

3 exd4! By move 12 your position is totally winning with the 2 Bs for the 2Ns, and a pawn up.

Thanks for taking a look.  I'll have to go back and look at your suggestions.  I want to learn from my mistakes.  I love this game.
