Over-extended Pawns

Below is an example of a position I recently encountered where black's pawns are over-extended. Although it dominates the center it makes for a sticky wicket if the king needs someplace to hide. In this position I decided to try and punch a hole in the center to get at black's vulnerable king, but it did not work out, partly because of the skill of my opponent, partly because of my own blunders, but was the strategy wrong too?

Long story short, what is the best strategy when confronted with this position?

great question! i personally would like white's position here better just because he is more developed, black's king is stuck in the center, etc. looks like you can immediately win material here with dxc5.

This looks like a win for White.  Trade to win material first. 1.dxc5.  If 1...dxe4 2.Nxe4.  Now if Black castles with 2...O-O, then 3.cxb6 making room for 4.Nc5.  If 2...bxc5, then 3.Nd6+! Kf8 4.Ng5! and if 4...fxg5, then 5.Qf3+ and 6.Qxc6 wins

Black's position is hopeless. I played a quick Blitz game against Crafty which demonstrates the win is unstoppable and one way to accomplish it.

1. dxc5 dxe4 2. Nxe4 bxc5 3. Nd6+ Kf8 4. Ng5 fxg5 5. Qf3+ Bf6 6. Qxc6 -- billwall

That's pretty. Material is equal, but Black's position is completely destroyed.

In other words, maybe you are looking at too much of the big picture with the question 'What overall strategy should I use?' Play with your pieces and use your resources. You have plenty in this position, as Mr. Wall pointed out.

Thanks everyone.

I like 30. Nc4 ...( I should try that sometime! )

Strategically, you're up 2 tempi & the move, your K is castled: time to open the position--the central pawns are already in position to do so(just keep an eye open for any possible traps & try not to exchange pieces--remember you're after the K or substantial material).
