Some Advice Needed

Hi everyone, new here -- I'm surprised I didn't register here before.

I'd like to know what you folks would advise in this situation. The goal obviously is to capture the king, but I'm wondering how this can be done as swiftly as possible. Moving my queen to E-3, then G-5 could be a start, though I'm not sure: I don't trust his rook there (it'll no doubt go for my knight, after which a tedious tug-of-war could ensue between my queen and bishop and his king and rook; which is dangerous, what with my king at C-2.)

What would you do?

Well I would go for Qe3. If Rc8, then Qg5 Kf8 Be2 is mate. Only thing it seems he can do is sac the rook.

After 1.Qe3, nothing can be done about your mate threat.

Silent is right, I missed the bishop on b4.

Queen to E-3 it is. Cheers -- this game has been dragging on for such a long time, I sometimes just can't seem to clearly see it anymore.

I would suggest buying Lazlo Polgars book Chess. It would help resolve this type of issue. This type of position should be in your subconsious, you should not have to actively think at all. A quick scan shows us that the dark square weakness is immediately decisive, so we do another quick scan over to the king. He is shielded by a piece, so there is no immediate check to even worry about. White checks on his second move, so if Black doesn't produce a forcing move on his 1st move, he has no counterplay, and therefore no resource for altering his fate. There are no forcing moves for Black, so this one is over.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm an inexperienced chess player, in fact, I only learned how to play a few months ago. This will be the first game I win. It's against a good player, too.

While it seems that your game is not in progress at chess.com, you did say it is a game in progress.  It is heavily frowned upon to ask for another player's advice until the game is over.

I didn't realize that: apologies. In my defense, I could say the game is over anyway (it's about the how now, not the what), but I see your point.

True true. A chess game is basically like an exam. It is where you 'show what you know'. Kibitzing - or chess chatting, needs to be reserved for post-mortem (after game) analysis. It is really not sporting to ask advice for an active game, as it puts the skills of others into play against the opponent. If you want to know how fanatical chess players are about such things, just look into the 'Toiletgate' scandal of the recent Worlds Championship.
