The Right Time to Resign?

Sort:
liftingfaces

Hey guys, check out this game, which I did win (it seems I only want analysis on wins, probably because I can see clearly why I lose usually). I'm curious if my opponent picked the right time to resign. I do believe I had a positional upper hand, but it didn't seem he was entirely lost. I would appreciate any feedback. I'll notate where I can.

Black is completely lost, so I would resign. He's down two pieces, he has no real counterplay, and you can force the exchange of additional material.

cool, thanks 'forests. i was planning to play the trap of Bb1+ and win his queen, were he to not move his queen off the 5th rank. it seemed he fell more and more out of position over the course of the match.

A few more thoughts:

"weak check"

3...Qe5+ - Yeah, the "Patzer Variation". Qa5 or Qd6 are more mainline.

"keep the pressure, but i feel i'm creating a weak pawn structure by chasing his bishop, i'm curious what the general way to play says about this"

4...Bg4 was too aggressive, and you capitalized on it in a typical and correct way. You are also right that your kingside pawns are both a strength and a weakness after this maneuver. White often castles queenside or avoids castling to reap the benefits without the risks.

8.O-O

I like 8.f4 and 9.f5, trapping his bishop! Another option is d4, immediately driving his queen away. This keeps up the pressure.

11.dxc6 "Clearing the d-file, preventing a queen-side castle for the moment, continuing the press of my pawn, am i overworking him?"

Actually, after 11.dxc6 Nxc6 he's developed a knight.

12.Nd5

Now he could play 12...O-O-O with a dangerous pin, exactly what you had hoped to prevent by playing 11.dxc6. I think instead of 12.Nd5 you still might have gone after that bishop you managed to trap early on.

Anyway, congratulations on your win, I'm glad to see you're really improving. Smile

I don't think the oppening is scandinavian, is it ? Why not 10...cxd5? after cxd5  11.Bxd5(forking the queen and the b7 pawn, winning his rock), great game :)

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qe5+ is the Scandinavian Defense / Patzer Variation. It's much less common than 3...Qa5 and 3...Qd6. Despite the name and the fact it's usually played by patzers, Emms points out it's not as bad as it looks. 4...Bg4 is really where Black really went wrong. If 4...Nf6 Black would have been fine.

i am always demoralized when played a bad move and would lead to many more bad moves and then loses. to prevent all this i resign when down in material without much compensation/
