Unsound Morra Smith Gambit?

Sort:

It maybe, but deployed against an unprepared opponent it can be deadly. So many traps! Probably my favourite opening and avoids having to learn Sicilian theory.

2 recent games against a strong opponent (mid-1800s):

I agree, Morra Gambit is best employed at adventurous sicilian players, (who havent done their homework). But nonetheless, black has been able to come up with rock solid defences against any plan white can up with leading to a significant advantage in the endgame.

The first time I came across the Morra gambit as black. I lost my nerves and clear thinking and lost decisively. I then studied it thoroughly and haven't lost since. I think I have played it as black more than 15 times since then, and have won every one of them. My verdict is that it is unsound, PROVIDED black manages to escape from all the potential traps.

Here are some links on how to play the Morra, if anyone is interested

By the way, good games. Nice play. Black is all-over the place, though. 'Question your victories as much as you question your defeats' Kasparov!! He probably knows what he is talking about...

I dont believe Fischer would play an opening he thought to be unsound against someone like Korchnoi, yet he played the gambit against Viktor the terrible. Fischer believed the morra gambit was good enough for a draw, but not more, indeed the game with Korchnoi ended in a draw. When there is talk of an openings "soundness" it usually concerns chess at the top level and not below master class. A GM can play very "unsound" openings against beginners and win every game. Below the master class I dont think we can say the gambit is "unsound". At the top levels.....maybe we can.
