How to get over a losing streak

Sort:
Greckoboi

I lost 12 games of chess in a row, and it feels impossible to win. IRL I play just fine, but I just hit a slump on chess.com. I genuinely do not know what to do about it.

Hello,

when this happens to me, I usually stop for the day.

Losing streaks usually means I am too tired/distracted to play and I would only get more frustrated.

Hello,

This is something called tilting.

You can analyze your lost game to take a pause or go outside and get some fresh air (what I do).

Bro Everyone there sometime but you want to analyse you lost game and see what mistakes you make and learn from them

Just take a break and refresh, don't keep playing because it will make it worse. If you are making consistent mistakes than review your games and try to correct them.

These replies are not helpful at all ngl I did 10 games over 2 days and I lost 9 of them

What I did was I just quit playing because I got sad -_- returned a few months later and peaked for 1 random day and tilted back into the shadow realm, made a new account (this is my main, once I feel comfortable, I may play on it again) like 9 months later and am trying to get back.
Some methods I used to prevent tilting back way when was having a main account and an alt account. Whenever you start tilting, switch to the alt account and chill for a few days/weeks until you get your skill level back up, and then you don't have to worry about ELO. The only downside to this is if you want to have all your games on one profile.
Also, play with ELO off during games so you are always playing on your toes (thinking your playing an easy game is VERY prone to blunders / sloppy playstyle).

View losses as lessons and opportunities to refine your game.

I've been tilting a lot lately and wanted to share my thoughts on why this might be happening to help others recognize and deal with it.

Common Causes

Unrealistic ExpectationsI've noticed that tilt often comes from having expectations that don't match reality. This happens when:
- You expect to always perform well
- You set unreasonably high standards for yourself
- You think you must win every game
- You get paranoia about cheating/cheaters

Emotional TriggersSeveral situations can trigger tilt:
- Toxic players in the chat
- Poor internet connection
- Multiple losses in a row
- Being one game away from a new top rating
- Personal underperformance

Psychological FactorsTilt gets amplified by:
- Too much focus on results instead of process
- Taking mistakes and losses personally
- Dwelling on negative experiences
- Performance pressure

Recognition and Prevention

The key thing I've learned is that tilt comes from a combination of a trigger, an emotion, and your response to it. Only when you react to the emotion does it become tilt. By adjusting expectations and focusing on what you can control, tilt becomes more manageable.
