Are they seriously giving 50% off on memberships to everybody but the already paying members who support their platform all these years? This is outrageous, what a stab in the back

It's possible there's some kind of special offer but probably not available to everyone that doesn't currently have premium

It is available to everybody but the premium members, i do not understand why we who support this platform for years do not deserve the discount as well.

That pretty much how all purchases work. If you buy and it later goes on sale, you don't get a refund/discount.

Where did you hear / read this?

There is a program giving 50% off to students at accredited institutions

The student discount is available to existing premium members.

from the Help pages:

We're happy to offer a 50% off any Premium membership plan (Gold, Platinum, or Diamond) to our college, university, and high school students on Chess.com! If enrolled at an accredited school, you are eligible for this discount after verifying with our partner, UNiDAYS.

Student discounts are not available in all countries. In India, the student discount is 25%. Student discounts can only be redeemed on the web.

You can find our Student Discount here.

Who is eligible for a student discount?

To be eligible for a student discount, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Enrolled in an accredited university, college, or high school.

  2. Have an official student email address, a digital copy of your school ID card, or access to your school’s education portal.

  3. Must be at least 16 years old.

How do I sign up for a discount?

Click here to go to our Student Discount page. Then simply follow the sign-up directions. Note: you will need a Chess.com account and a UNiDAYS account to get the student discount. If you don’t have them, you will be directed to create one or both. But don’t worry, the whole process is quick and easy!

In which countries are student discounts available?

Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I am a student with an existing Premium membership. Can I still get the student discount?

Yes! Existing Premium members who are students can claim their discount by contacting our member support team here.

How long will my discount last?

Your discount will last for the entirety of your Premium membership (even if you are no longer a student). However, if you deactivate your Premium membership and want to upgrade later with a student discount, you must re-verify your student status through UNiDAYS.

Who is UNiDAYS?

UNiDAYS is a company we have partnered with that specializes in verifying student status.

I encountered a problem trying to verify my student enrollment with UNiDAYS — what can I do?

Please get in touch with the UNiDAYS support team here.

Can I have more than one Chess.com account tied to my UNiDAYS account?

No. Only one Chess.com account can be linked to a UNiDAYS account.

Can I apply a student discount to a gift Premium membership?

No. Student discounts cannot be applied to gift Premium memberships.

You can find our Student Discount here!

I don't think so. You have to wait for the billing cycle to end and apply for the student discount with the new yearly/monthly plan

True, but it's a subscription.

It works the same way with subscription purchases as well

xor_eax_eax05

They do this in order to attract new customers. People who are subscribed are already paying customers ...

This is normal across many businesses.

can I cancel the membership when still on free mode then try to upgrade with the 50% off?

How are you on free mode? It says you have had a diamond membership since last July.

Maybe when my diamond membership runs out I won't bother to renew. Existing premium membership accounts should be offered 50% off the renewal price just like the members that don’t support Chess.com.

Good lord Martin, could you be any more of a chess.com sycophant?
