I guess some averages (without any documentary basis) of registered chess players on Chess.com:
Most are amateurs who play an average of six or seven games a week, study chess problems, openings etc, about 2 hours a week, and have a rating of 900-1100. If anyone has more precise knowledge on these matters, I would appreciate your input.

Im currently around 950, my peak was 1100 on 20 dec, and i can say that all you have mentioned is correct for average players who play chess for fun, serious players like me who want to improve play chess about 1-2 hrs a day and study it for 1 hr daily.

In 1972 we followed the games of the Spassky-Fisher championship, using my friend's newspaper clippings from ABC (Spain). We reproduced them on a small board on the sand at the beach. We also later followed the famous match of the elegant Karpov against the genius Kasparov. I have a PhD and have not stopped playing Chess for pleasure with friends, doctors, biologists, etc. since then. Despite studying Kotov's opening books, and playing weekly, we clearly have not gone much higher than 1300.
