Bobby Fischer's death makes me feel sad. He is the greatest chessmaster of all time and has left us  a legacy of .........his games!  We here at chess.com should mourn his loss!

It's true. He's dead.  His instructional book, "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" is the only book on chess that I've ever devoured. He learned how to play chess by reading the instructions on a cardboard chess set box that he and his sister bought at the five and dime. He did turn out to be a lunatic. Many people that are too smart for thier own good turn out that way. He was bitter and unhinged, but he was probably a genius. Que la vaya bien y con Dios Bobby Fischer.

For those that read English, he has indeed died.  My sympathy goes out to him and his family but he was one hell of a chess play.

If you were a chess player it would have quite a different meaning to you.

I am glad that my posting is re-instated!  The "Search for Bobby Fischer will go on,  as it is imperative that the Chessworld finds another Fischer now.

The first chess book I ever read was "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess", and I've given away many copies of that book over the years. Not being a big sports nut, Fischer was one of my childhood heroes, even though he stopped playing only a year after I was born. He was the enigma...the mystery...the name that was mentioned with a combination of loss, hope, adoration and even a bit of fear. I remember my dad wearing a shirt to several tournaments that read, "Bobby Fischer is avoiding me". True, his later years were filled with unhappiness, mostly brought on by his own actions, but I think we will all remember his chess. And his chess was beautiful. His fierceness at the board was a force few could face.

I hope that Bobby had at least a moment of peace at the end - a moment of clarity, and that wherever he is now, he knows that we miss him.

Rest in Peace, RJF. Your flag is down.

When I started playing tourneys back in the 1970's, all the high schoolers played sicilian najdorf and kings indian and ruy lopez, all because of Fischer. He had taken on the Soviet Machine and beat it single handed. It was such a political time, cold war still going on and the USA had a champion over the big red russian bear.

I can see some of his hate for USA. He was their champion and they turned their back on him and ridiculed him. He obviously had some mental illnesses, but he was quite possibly the best of all time too. He crushed Taminov, Larsen and dispatched Petrosian (who was probably better than Spassky then) and then beat Spassky.

If modern medicines had been available for him to help regulate his mental issues, no telling how good he could have been.

Bobby, we played over your games, you taught us how to play, you gave us great joy in your brilliance. I personally am very grieved at your passing. May God grant you peace.

Many don't like the views he espressed in the last years,me too,but let's not forget he was a man who had many personal problems, and I don't think he was ever evil, just strange and maybe sick.

And until 1972 he played the best chess ever seen, so I'm sad for the death of such a genius

bye bye bobby

Cry  Farewell Bobby...  (Some may not bother at all because of many controversies, but I don't judge the man--that's between him and his maker.)

i can't believe you said this about Bobby or anybody! He's the only official U.S. World Champion & couldn't help for his insanity or genius. He caused the biggest chess boom in USCF history. And his games got me to see some logic in chess when i was starting out. i believe he's done more good than harm,  certainly more good than Charles Manson.
