Yes because the highest rated player in 2000 didn't lose his title right??
Fischer, Carlsen and Kasparov are great players but they have different skills,
Garry Kasparov - Best in the opening
Magnus Carlsen - Best in the Middle game
Bobby Fischer - Best in the End game
Fischer could beat Carlsen only if he reached the End game very quickly, because Carlsen was better than Fischer in the middle game.
Nuclear_Knight, it's great that you're interested in the history of chess.
I hope you take some time to study the games of Magnus Carlsen. His play in all phases is incredible. Few would consider his middle game to be his strongest area, despite his brilliance there.
Magnus has helped to revolutionize how we play the openings. As White, he will play nearly anything. He has a fantastic memory and prepares his unusual lines very deeply, but with the main point of reaching unusual positions rather than trying to gain an objective advantage. As Black, he tends to play main lines against the best players. He's content to gain equality as Black, and then push for an edge.
Magnus is magical in the endgame. He has reached many positions where the commentators expected a draw soon, only to find a way to win. He has outplayed the very best players, including Karjakin, and most recently Ivanchuk, from dead even, fairly lifeless endgame positions.
Fischer's brilliance as White was his crystal clear play, which was strongly reminiscent of Capa's best chess. Just like Capa, Fischer's brilliance wasn't really in the endgame, rather it was in the simplified middle games where he saw before his opponents which endgame favored him the most. As Black, Fischer tended to get slightly messier positions and tried to outplay his opponents in the complications. He still wasn't quite as chaotic in the middlegame as Geller, Tal, or even Korchnoi. But he didn't shy away from complications, especially as Black.
Kasparov really was the best opening player on the planet until Kramnik came along. Kasparov opened up his notebook to his students, Nakamura and Carlsen. (Think about that for a moment!) Even twenty years later, his openings were still relevant.
But Kasparov's true brilliance was in his grand attacking games. He discovered whole new categories of attacking ideas that hadn't really been seen before. His game against Topalov is considered perhaps the greatest game ever played. It wasn't due to the opening, it was due to his tactical and strategic vision. Take a look.
See if you can guess the moves after the opening without looking at the complete game in the second diagram. We'll start on move 7. One of Kasparov's favorite strategies was to attack on one side, then the other, and find some sort of sac that would separate his opponent's pieces from going back and forth.
Topalov played extremely well, but Kasparov's play was inspiring.

I think that Carlsen would win both because Carlsen is alive. Meanwhile Fischer is dead so it would be hard for him to get to the match.
Fischer would beat Carlson like a government mule. He'd beat on him like a war drum. He'd knock him around like a bop doll. He'd beat the brakes off him. Fischer'd beat Carlson like he owe'd him money. Fischer would stomp a mudhole in Carlson and walk it dry. Fischer would jerk a pop knot on Carlson's head big enough for a calf to suck on. Fischer would give Carlson a 3$ haircut then walk him around on all fours screaming "momma!" Fischer would get a hold of Carlson and light him up like a Christmas tree. Fischer would get a hold of Carlson and turn him every which way but loose. He'd beat the damn wheels off him is what he'd do.
Fischer by twenty miles, ten if he plays now when dead.
Yes. Fischer right now, could beat Carlson right now. It'd take a little longer than when Fischer was in his prime, but he'd still win easily.

The best post and accurate. Fischer will crush Carlsen because Carlsen has a weak spirit, could not beat Karjakin in standard time control, had to go rapid time control to beat a solid player like Karjakin; a true champion would beat Karjakin in standard time control. Fischer when he meet his opponent he instilled fear in his opponent.

Yup. I thought Carlson was this invincible God or something (hadn't paid much attention actually to chess in a few years.) Then I saw he barely, barely scraped by Karjackin, by the skin of his teeth, and only with a single very volatile blitz game. Basically he cracked like an egg under pressure, and barely got more than lucky against a top 15 guy. Fischer ate the best Russians alive and picked his teeth with the bones.
So he would probably win
