You can see the list of players in the competitions. I like to play against higher ranked too,and lower too... but, in case you want to improve your chances to be first, try to play in competitions close to your level. Also, the very crowded competition with many players can be an obstacle if you try to get first place. Is not a rule, but thats can make more or less dificult.Personally I experiment an positive stress on tournamnets. You know ,is like a race to get position...that stress make experience a bit different that a other match on my opinion.Trying to make atack strategies...fast and surprises...Remember reclick on name of competition the times you need to find players list to discover player levels and number of players

Study endgames and the “when & how” to go from the middlegame to a favorable endgame structure. This is a skill that many players (including myself) often fail to recognize or time correctly.

And medails not tell all story. Is great to getting medails, but I feel good getting,as example,a 4 place in a competition +90 players.Yet on low positions, feel proud to be an sportist in challenge trying your Best.Good Luck... !🙂

I've heard in "the wisest things ever said about chess" that Tournament play prolonged pressure is even more effective than usual. If you have the stamina and focus for it you might be able to force good players to make mistakes by prolonging the middle game and end game as long as possible.
