Get with the program Afaf. Becoming a GM's easy nowadays, everyone's trying for it.

Oooh.  I want in on this.  Where do I sign?

Nothing of the sort is required. All you need to do is believe in it.

And then just sit back and let the rating points roll in.

ReedRichards

It will be very difficult and requires much sacrifice...but not impossible. However, make sure you understand the income statistics before fully committing to such a career....maybe 1% of rated chess players earn a living playing chess....and that purse is currently shrinking not increasing.

Conflagration_Planet

Don't liston to them. I just learned the object of the game a few weeks ago, and I'm all ready a GM.

General Motors.  Now that it's owned by the U.S. gov't, all Americans are GMs, right?

Kernicterus

It's pretty funny when you see GM in the paper and you think of chess before thinking of the car company.

Kernicterus

I already know a couple GMs who make barely anything...Silman's response doesn't surprise me at all.

kco

afaf why the negatively ? surely he can get somewhere but true he shouldn't give up a regular job for the income but he can still pursue his dream as a GM, look at Bill Gate everyone was making fun of him cause he was a nerd and look at him now, millions are working for him and making 100's Billions $ !

tomjoad

LOL... comparing Gates to a chess player. That is just... silly. (ok, sorry - I meant stupid ;-)

Hitch a ride on the clue train: where is the money coming from? This ain't NASCAR. The crashes in chess are not nearly so dramatic - and let's face it, that's what the public likes to see.

kco

You can say what you like tomjoad you are just jealous that you are not a GM.

Kernicterus

Who was making fun of Gates??  You mean after he was already a billionaire?

Anyway, there is no negativity...but I do feel a small pinch of pain when I run across someone terribly delusional.  Maybe I think reality is a safer place to be.

kco

Peoples were making fun of Gates before becoming a billionaire.

kco

"Maybe I think reality is a safer place to be." define reality.

Ah! You do have a delicate touch, indeed. Nicely said.

The statement 'du abjure' (sic) was "look at Bill Gate everyone was making fun of him cause he was a nerd and look at him now, millions are working for him and making 100's Billions $ !"

The fallacy is that a chess nerd with ambition in any way equals a computer nerd with ambition in terms of opportunity, possibility of financial success, etc.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but no one goes into chess to earn their fortune. That is even more stupid than getting a BFA and expecting to earn a living off your art.

Well it's not evn Holland where Hollywood movies are made...

Kernicterus

I'm becoming more and more convinced that logic and chess skill have an eerily tenuous relationship.
