HI everybody, I have some question here, first which is the most popular sport and which is the  most widely play sport, between chess or soccer and why.I thought soccer is the most popular sport because of the coveraged and many spectators.

Here [ in Australia] we don't get anything on tv on chess. We do have many players for chess and soccer but for chess the age goes from 5 to 90 and in both sexes.

Now i am not talking  about electronic games or on-line games through computers. What do you think?

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, both in terms of # of spectators and # of participants, no question about it.

Soccer is the most popular, but personally I don't like the randomness in the game, and after 2 hours the score may still stand at 0-0.  In terms of the amount of space needed to play, chess is best.

Watching a low scoring soccer game is about as exciting as watching grass grow to  me. However, I feel the same way about a baseball game that ends 1-0  as well.

in my town soccer is the most popular sport followed by football (which is my favorite sport)

Soccer is the most popular sport... because chess is not a sport.

But even just comparing the two pasttimes, soccer is clearly far more popular in participants and spectators. The demographics of participants is definitely much more confined, but I still think it attracts much more players. I am sure my view is rather skewed, though, as the places I have travelled to is limited.

Then the IOC is wrong. A sport takes physical skill to compete in.

@ Tonightonly

What made u think chess is not a sport?

Rabid_Dog

Aah.  The perennial question of what constitutes a game and what is a sport.  I was only contemplating that this morning.  Of course, football/soccer, rugby, American football, cricket and chess are all games.  We speak of going to the game.  The Olympics is known as the games.  A long time ago it seemed that sports used to be restricted to hunting, shooting and fishing.

Odd thing is that sportsmen seem to play games whilst those hunting and shooting go after game!  I don't think a name matters.

Anyway in the two most populous countries in the world, football is not the most popular sport.  In India it's cricket and I think in China it is table-tennis.

Football is definately more popular and 0-0 draws aren't so bad if both teams play attacking football but just get unlucky in the scoring department. It's not all about scoring, it's skill, movement, spacial awarness, tactics and raw courage. Good teams will display all these things even in a "boring" 0-0 game.

To be considered a sport, it doesn't have to be physical.  Archery, e.g., is a sport and it's not physical at all--it's even more of a mental sport--you "will" the arrow towards the bull's eye.

They're gonna make it an olympic sport soon and there will be players competing from all over the world

soccer/football is about the same as chess here in Alabama which means that next to nobody knows how to play or could care less, how ever I do like both of them so much that I could watch and play all that time

Soccer is definately more popular then chess and any other sport/game.  Everyone in the world plays soccer.  The beuty about soccer is that it is an opportunity for people who live in the slums or in poverty to turn their lives around through football (soccer).  Soccer may seem boring to many when there are lopw scoring games, but once you really get into soccer and watch a lot of games 0-0 scores won't seem so bad to you.  Soccer is my favorite sport and one day I hope to become a professional soccer player.

regular soccer is like 7-hour tournament games of chess - too me it's zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

indoor soccer is like blitz chess - to me it's :) :) :) :)

The last soccer World Cup Final was watched by 284 million people.

The average match within the tournament attracted 93 million viewers.

I love chess dearly, but it will never compete!
