Fischer was the best until Kasparov came around, and he dominated until Carlsen inevitably surpassed him. Its inevitable that some new pródigy (or maybe one thats currently in top 100 or somethin) will be strong enough to dethrone Magnus, and be stronger than he ever was (compared to other players fyi). Magnus' peak was 2882 reached 2x, and may not ever surpass 2875, maybe not even 2850 ever again, but some younger person may dedícate life to the sport and reach 2900, maybe even the coveted 3000. But we have to let the pot simmer for a while for it to happen, and still, Magnus is getting "old" (for chess anyway) and his reign may sadly come to an end within the next 10, heck maybe in the next 5 years or so

It definetly won't be magnus. His downfall is coming soon.

yes very true, magnus is going to fall soon, he will likely never even reach 2900 elo, it will almost certainly be some other prodigy

Coward crybaby carlsen has already had his downfall. Remember when 19 year old Hans smashed him in the 2022 Sinquefield Cup? Carlsen was so jealous and sore that he threw a giant fit and tried to sabotage Hans's career.

And, yes, a 3000 elo is possible, for a player like Hans👍

If we look at Han's legitimate games (the ones where he didn't receive outside help) he doesn't appear to be on track to even crack 2800. He's going to need a LOT of "outside help" if you know what I mean if he ever wants to get to 2900 or higher.

Hans is now about 21 years old. When Magnus Carlsen was 21 years old he had already been world number one for a couple years. And won the world championship the following year. I'm not sure Hans is even in the top 30.

Magnus is struggling to reach 2900.

But some player will quite possibly cross the 3000 barrier, in the future. Someone who'll become much stronger than Magnus. Some young prodigy who will glance at Magnus' best games and see inaccuracies and room for improvement.

They're likely not born yet.

I always wonder, who will that one chess player be?

jayden12when

I mean, technically people have done on chess.com like Hikaru.

Yes

As ratings get higher, the number of rating points available from each game decreases. The top players have fewer opponents from whom they can gain significant points, creating a practical ceiling.

Maybe if someone is very passionate or masochistic

Yes - but the question is related to FIDE Classical (OTB).

So far Magnus has gotten the closest to 3000, when he reached 2882.

That was 10 years ago. Nobody has been able to get close to that rating (yet), let alone surpass it ...

For 3000 otb jst need more higher rated opponents to reach 2800+ or we need Magnus Carlson or hikaru get farmed for elo the second part is unlikely to happen

I think we'll hit 3000. Maybe in Faustino Oro era

I think faustino is likely to hit 2900 but maybe some other prodigy after him will reach 3000 otb

I mean Hikaru farmed gm's for 3500 bullet. ofc online doesn't matter as much as otb.

It doesn't lol though if your 2800 on chess.com your likely to be at least 2300 otb(probably closer to 2400-2600 strength ) even if it doesn't matter technically speaking
