Do professional chess players tend to be single?

It seems like getting good enough to be a pro would command too much dedication to the game to be able to have a relationship or marriage.

Do professionals in other fields remain single? Not usually.

Kasparov, Anand, Aronian, Grischuk, Mamedyarov and Giri come to mind as pros who are or were married. Kasparov and Anand were world champions.

Lots of people aren’t married—me for instance. Marriage is weird.

Kasprov got divorced in the early 2000s, and tragically, Aronian's wife died less than a year ago at a young age... but I don't know what you mean when you say many of those were not married.

Anand has been married forever and has kids, I don't know the name of his wife.

Giri is really young, and posted photos of his marriage on social media. Grischuk and Mamedyarov I know from reading on wiki.

There are probably other married top players I just don't know them off the top of my head.

I will say that I love MVL, and I want him to do well in the candidate's tournament... but he seems socially awkward. He's probably not married. To a lesser extent Caruana and So seem a little awkward / childish so I don't think they're married.

They probably are.

Probably the same as any other group: some married, some single.

The real reason chess players stay single is that they think for long time for their next move happy.png

Many manage to balance their dedication to chess with fulfilling personal lives, proving that relationships and success in chess can coexist.
