Euwe'd like to know how to pronounce Euwe...

Sort:

Recently, one evening, I was speaking with an acquaintance of mine, and we were talking about chess books of past times. He mentioned that Euwe had written a good book on chess (Judgment and Planning in Chess). I said, I believe it's pronounced, "EY-VAH", to which he retorted upon reflection, "Actually, it would be pronounced, 'OY-VEH!'" Could somebody please clear up this mystery for me, so I can correctly pronounce the name of one of the truly important figures in chess history?

Let's have a vote on this people!

Euwe'd like to thank you for your feedback.

you friend is closer to the right, I guess. It should be read as OY-VE or something like that.

Well I Euwe-sed to pronounce it "you", so I suppose anything's better than that, right?

This 1956 video is the first reference in Euwe's Wikipedia listing. In the video, his name is pronounced at the 23-second mark.

I've heard "OO - VAY".

Like the way you'd pronounce "Groove" minus the "Gr" and instead of a silent e, it makes a long A sound.

At least that's how I've heard it.

I've also heard it pronounced like the animal, ewe, but that's clearly wrong!

C'mon people, you know I get a sick joy and thrill from learning how to pronounce this beautiful name!

bruwaenzinNY

i speak dutch as in the video, 'Euwe' is phonetically rather difficult in English

eu is like the french "two": deux - closest is probably 'ea' as in bear followed by a 'w'

the 'w' in Euwe itself is a very soft form of the v

and then a final soft e

@ChessPlayinDude47

the -ae- is an old dutch way of writing the "aa" sound - commonly seen in last names like mine

this is the 'aa' as in aardvark happy.png (almost)

(and though i wave the stars & stripes on my profile, i'm actually from Belgium)

If I remember correctly, Soltis said to go for "nervous" without the n and without the s.

Not quite right, but very close; Probably close enough for us Americans, and easy to remember.

I think we should just call him Uncle Max.

kindaspongey

If I remember correctly, Soltis made the suggestion in order to help those who made Euwe sound like a relative of Huey, Duey, and Louie.

Lol! I do not think Amerikans are able to pronouce Dutch if I read all this, Very funny! happy.png  Dutch also has difficult sounds like   ij ,  ui ,  oei , eu , etc etc

Rasta_Jay

It's pronounced üve ,   ü = u+e  no close sound in English.
