Difficult puzzle for experienced players (1700+)

Hello Folks,

I just played my best game ever, so I decided to make a puzzle out of it.

The following puzzle is pretty hard to solve. Even strong players will find this puzzle challenging.

Good Luck and happy new year! happy.png

This is the whole game:

GM_chess_player

Qxg4 Nxg4 Bc4+ Qe6 Bxe6#

I  didn't cheat.

I have 2000 in lessons and I saw a similar patter like this so I assumed sacrificing my queen to get checkmate.

GM_chess_player

Congrats on the win anyways,sir.

I got it but it took about 30 seconds.....likely never would have seen it in the actual game, unless it was a long time control.....good game!

Thanks! In many cases, my sacrifices go terribly wrong and I lose. But this sac was a rare moment of brilliance. the time control in this game was 15|10 and it took me like 3-4 minutes to see the trap and calculate it

Solved in 25 seconds. Good game OP.

I solved it easily in 10 seconds, and I'm rated 1400. Maybe there is some truth to my tactics rating of 1950? I thought it was inflated.

Also, it is not forced. Black does not have to recapture the knight. Material is even. Black should focus on king safety.

It's a Boden's Mate pattern which is very well known and easy to spot in this position. White wins the knight tactically.

1700+ is crazy. 1350-1450 is probably more realistic and has a very good chance of still being too high in terms of rating.

If I changed this puzzle a little bit, put the white queen on f4 rather than g5, this puzzle would have been much harder and would have challenged 1700+ players. this puzzle, in its current form, is easy for some players, because the white queen is under threat, and the threat makes it obvious that the queen is the piece that should move first.

The queen has nothing to do with the Boden’s Mate pattern that jumps out at the player though...

All that matters after you notice that pattern is the c4 square and the knight that defends it. Then you look for what advantages you can gain from it. In this example you can win the knight.
