Game With Most Amount of Moves

Sort:
Grandmaster3141

Out of all the chess games you played, which one had the highest moves and how many? I played a live chess game with 114 moves! It ended with the 50 move rule, though. :-(

Deranged

The longest game that actually ended with 1 player winning was about 120 moves. I've played a few 150+ move games that ended in a draw, though.

Conquistador

I had an atomic game go 260 moves, but it was drawn long before then.  My opponent insisted on playing on the drawn endgame.

I played a 120+ game today in a real life tournament

neel11

I played a 220 move game in live chess. Two nights against king.

Theoretically, the absolute longest possible game of chess is 1500 moves. 50 moves before taking a piece for 30 pieces, leaving king and king.

It is much larger than that. Remember that pawn moves also reset the 50-move counter.

I didn't know that. Gonna have to redo my calculations.

Can you post the game please?

The longest possible chess game can go on forever if neither player claims the 50 move draw and no arbiter steps in happy.png

I am not going to post the 5,870 move game for two reasons:
1: I am not going to spend hours doing something that boring.

2.  Nobody has determined the sequence of moves yet; they used mathematics to determine the number.

The longest tournament game was Nikolić–Arsović, Belgrade 1989, a draw in 269 moves.
The  longest decisive tournament game was Danin–Azarov, Turnov 2016, 1-0 in 239 moves.

It's not hard to come up with the sequence of moves. You can just move the knights around while avoiding threefold repetition, push a pawn or make a capture, repeat.

I played an otb game that ended in a 50 move draw back in the 80's. I should have won, but I was 15 and didn't know my endgames at all. He was a regional representative with a high opinion of himself, so I was kind of happy just not losing. half.png
