Check out the 2011 anime "Endgame". It's basically a better Death Note with L as main character if he was a Chess World Champion

Not only is there an anime about chess, there's an anime about someone endeavoring to create an anime about chess, which then spawned a craze in Japan when a board game was published in which you, the player, create an anime about chess. Oddly, the rules in said game are described completely wrong.
