I recommend joining an ITB chess club and then studying middlegame and endgame principles.

My rating in my first OTB tournament was in the 1400s. Before that, I had read some 40 or 50 chess books. Perhaps 20 or 25 instruction books by Chernev, Reinfeld, Horowitz, Lasker, Fine, Fischer. And then another 25 or so games collections—Capalanca, Alekhine, Fischer, Tal, Botvinnick, Spielman, Rubinstein, Fine, and others. The games and annotations were over my head. But I picked up patterns and tactics from the masters. This was more effect than just playing blitz games.
