In your game against tboner(Jan 1, 2008), your queen was able to be captured because it was not protected(his king could capture your queen without still being in check).  If you look back at similar positions in your game archive, you'll see the difference.  Your game with cheeckychops0(Dec 30, 2007) shows her queen right on top of your king, but this time her queen is protected by her rook.  Another example of a protected queen making the kill is a game you played with newpixi64(Dec 13, 2007).  It was protected by the bishop.

For the queen to be able to deliver checkmate while on a square adjacent the enemy king, these conditions need to be met:

     The queen must be protected.

The queen must be safe from all other enemy pieces

The enemy king must have no flight square(a square that is not attacked by

     any of your pieces)

I hope this helps!

You can look at a player's games by going to his online chess profile.  I looked at your games to get a bit of clarification.  Once I figured out the problem I chose examples from your games to make it personal and familiar.
