In all these now vs then grandmaster what-if's, why does everyone also think the game would also be played across time?  Capablanca playing Carlsen today would have access to the same engines, databases, frequent-high competition, etc. - he would NOT be stuck in his World Championship period of 1921-27 and send his moves through a time fissure!

What use would he have of a chess engine and a database when playing Carlsen? If you mean that he would be born 1990 and have the exact same upbringing as Carlsen he would no longer be Capablanca...

Capablanca was the naked king, Alekhine was a spy, Morphy was sedated and Steinitz was a dwarf, and Magnus is a movie star.

Fischer was an astro nut.

ummm... OK....

By the way has there been any quotes about if the 2 verus each other who would win? because that could help with this argument.

Carlsen might have difficulty getting to grips with Capa's human style so i will have 20 euros on the Caps.

What great players preceded Capablanca? What great games could Capablanca study for being better? What tools more than a board and 32 pieces and any book for studying?

Magnus is a great player, definitively. There is not any doubt. But today any player can spend hours, days, weeks training with engines and studying matches like Capablanca vs Alhekine.

Of course Magnus could have more chances of winning, having a lot of memorized positions and vast experience playing against live legends.

So it's not a fair comparison. If Magnus is a great and talented player, Capablanca was also a great one and the inspiration for many generations after him.

Capablanca was a natural genius. Karpov and Kasparov know that, even Carlsen. If the cuban was born in this century with all these technologies and Chess history for studying and the same talent he had... It would be simply invencible.

Aren't these discussions asinine? What people are failing to consider is that people in Capablanca's days were literally pioneers of modern chess. Meaning, the books that Magnus learned from, and the theory he memorized with his incredible memory were all written by these giants that came before who literally had nothing to go on except raw intellect and instinct. Pulling ideas from the darkness for future greats to learn from and build upon. If Magnus and Capablanca were to switch places in history, it would be Capablanca learning from what Magnus pioneered and he would undoubtedly be a far stronger player than he was when there were no such things as engines. So keep that in perspective.
