Lowest rating possible

What is the lowest Elo rating possible in chess? Is possible to have a negative rating? I was thinking of trying to become the lowest rated player on the site since becoming the best has proven to be difficult.

I have a friend here that is usually rated below 200, with like 7,000 games

I'd like to play them.

I can't find that user anymore when I search. Has he decided to hang up his pawns?

In the beginning on chess.com you could go to zero, but now IIRC it's capped at 100.

Same for USCF I believe, can't go lower than 100.

FIDE doesn't really have that problem as you have to win games to get a rating in the first place.

CFC and ECF I don't know.

Interesting question. I don't know, but I suspect negative ratings are theoretically possible because both chess ratings and IQ scores are based on statistics with an arbitrary, forced target number at some point, and the Normal probability distribution (which I assume is the foundation for both scales) has no lower limit on the horizontal axis. Most people don't know that negative IQ scores are possible, and I didn't either, until I read it in a book, though I can't find the reference at the moment. In practice, however, as Chin pointed out, someone may have declared an arbitrary minimum, or such instances may be so rare that one never sees them, or a special means of producing or testing such low ranges might be required.

There's nothing algebraically to stop it, i.e. there's no dividing by zero or anything.

But it's artificially capped.

Heard about a guy lost a tournament game to a 300 rated player and when his friends laughed and asked him how in the world could he have lost to a 300 player, without missing a beat he  answered "oh, he was really more like a 400 player".

And they all laughed even harder.

I see you've been trying.

Is it possible to get -1 rating?

jeanfan

I think it is impossible, but 0 rating could be possible!
